"New Friend:" The kids were all very excited to start the New Year with a new classmate. Vickie has joined our class. Most of the kids already knew Vickie from kindergarten. Please note that our class count is now 13 (7 boys and 6 girls).
Mother Hubbard: Right before break, I noticed that our snack cupboard is getting a little bare. Feel free to help replenish it. We basically have Ritz and Triscuits left. The kids really look forward to their afternoon treats, so thanks for keeping them fed. We also are out of cleaning wipes for hands/desks.
Chapter Book: I enjoy the Magic Tree House series. I just read the first book to the class. I have lost track of how many are in the series. (Good news, Scholastic usually sells this series). The kids seem hooked already.
Box Tops: We are almost done collecting for this year. The 5th grade class is crushing everyone again, but we will all benefit. We will be done collecting them at the end of January; however, I will gladly keep our container for the rest of the year. If you want to continue to send in the box tops after January, I will give them to Ms Hurley at the end of the year (I promise).
Spelling: Homework and test on Friday. We are working on digraphs (kn, wr, gh & ph).
Reading: We are starting the 2nd part of our reading series. The kids have finished their first book. Their homework this week, is to read stories from it to you. Please complete the attached homework sheet and return the book and the sheet on Friday - thanks!
new story: Mr. Putter and Tabby Write the Book.
phonics: digraphs - kn, wr, gh & ph
comprehension: focus on the setting
grammar: adjectives (words that describe nouns)
vocab words: enchanting, cozy, instead, thrilled, review, celebrate, disturb, underneath, procrastinate & diversion
Math: We are going back to some geometry. We will be measuring the perimeter of triangles, squares and rectangles. We will be discussing the different types of triangles. We will look at parallel lines and parallelograms (have 4 sides and the opposite sides are parallel). There is math homework (story problems) due on Friday.
Science: The kids have been anxious to start another science unit, so we will start our animal unit. We will talk about mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians (there's a challenge word for you) and fish.
Thanks,
Jaime
