Book It: I am so excited to tell you that we will be participating in the Pizza Hut Book It Program. It is a program designed to reward children for reading. It truly is what it is "sliced up" to be. It is by no means meant to be one more thing that Mrs. Williams is torturing you with at night. It is purely an optional activity. If you decide to participate, then you need to record the nights that your child reads (or is read to) on the attached calendar. You need to read 10-15 minutes, 4 nights a week. On your Book It calendar, please cross off, color in, mark with a sticker etc...the nights that you read together. At the end of the month sign your calendar and return it to me for a certificate for a free, personal pan pizza at any Pizza Hut. Please don't turn in the calendar until October 28 or 31.
Pizza Hut has partnered up with other companies to make e-books available to you at the following websites:

MapTesting: The kids did a really nice job. We are all done for now with this test.
Chapter Book: We have just finished reading our first (certainly not last) Magic Tree House book. Ask your child where Jack and Annie ended up when they traveled through time.
Math: We are finally nearing the end of Chapter 1. Some units are fast and some ... not so much. We will take a test this week on Chapter 1 and begin our next unit. In chapter 2, we will be using rulers! The kids love to measure things. Our vocabulary words that we will put into use are the following: centimeter (cm), length, line segments, horizontal and vertical. Prior to all of this cool measurement stuff, we have to learn how to add 3, single-digit numbers together and review greater than (>) and less than(<). Homework - due Friday (of course).
Social Studies: We will continue to look at maps. We will pay close attention to using the key on the map.
Reading: We are about to embark on a new journey. We are going to start using our other reading series. We will be working in small groups now. I will keep you posted. Reading homework - due Friday (remember it counts towards Book It)!
Grammar: Review week
Spelling: Review list - homework (due Friday).
2nd Grade Goes on Tour: Hopefully by the time that you receive this newsletter, we will have completed a tour of our new school. Ask your child if we pulled it off.
D.I.: The Desk Inspector made his/her first mystery visit to our classroom. The D.I. stops in once a month and leaves a prize in the CLEAN desks!
Toys: Just a reminder please help to make sure that your child leaves all of their special treasures at home so that nothing happens to them. It is heart breaking when things get lost/broken. Simply stated, no toys at school - thanks!
Thanks,
Jaime
